1993. On an oddly sultry May morning, I stare longingly at the auburn leaves out the window of my year 7 maths class as one of them graciously floats to the ground on the breeze. I’m entranced.

As I sit there in silence, I recollect the evergreen native tree under which I found myself the Friday prior, overlooking the flowing river and pondering the tranquillity of my situation, as I accompanied Dad on a corporate golf day as his caddie, withdrawn from a day’s learning, to bask in the Autumn sunshine on the hillsides of Emerald.
